Sofi & Stuart met working at the Coop in Lamlash on the Isle of Arran in 2019.

When we chatted about their wedding plans we laughed about the idea of trying to do some of their couples photographs in the supermarket that they met. Their wedding ceremony was at St Brides Church in Lochranza and the reception at Whiting Bay hall so we would be passing through Lamlash anyway.

During my post grad in architecture, I wrote my dissertation on retail architecture. A book I loved was called ‘Shopping, A Century of Art and Consumer Culture’. I loved Andreas Gurksy’s iconic works of huge supermarkets with repetitive shelves and colours. The book also featured images by Roy Arden of Wallmart stores in Canada and Guillaume Bijl of supermarkets in Basel. Miwa Yanagi’s work ‘Elevator Girls’ made use of dramatic one point perspective in her compositions of the female subjects in a retail setting. I was very excited at the idea of creating wedding photographs inspired by these ideas. It felt like a full circle moment of combining my architecture and photography creativity all together.

When I arrived at the Lamlash Coop with Sofi & Stuart I looked for as many repetitive patterns as possible. The juice and chocolate aisle seemed to give us the best blocks of colours so we started there. On the way out the green boxes of the fruit and veg caught my eye so I asked Sofi & Stuart to stand very straight on in front of them. We did try to do serious faces but inevitably ended up in laughter.

The story of their couple’s photographs even made it into the Arran Banner where you can go and have a read about how they met and their wedding day. If you register you get to read one article a week. It’s also out in print Friday the 10th July.
